Research Center Disputation

The rules of Research Center Disputation are set out in Section 12 of the Special Provisions of the University Doctoral Regulations applicable to the Faculty of Informatics.

Before the official submission of the dissertation, a research center disputation must be held.

  • The research center disputation is organized by the candidate’s department, which is also responsible for sending out the invitations.
  • The research center disputation must be publicly announced on the Doctoral School’s website to ensure proper publicity.
  • The research center disputation committee consists of a chair and two reviewers. All committee members must hold a scientific degree (PhD or equivalent).
  • The chair of the committee is the head of the department. If the chair is also the supervisor of the doctoral candidate, another qualified person must be appointed (e.g., the head of the doctoral program).
  • The two reviewers must prepare written evaluations of the dissertation in advance. At least one of the reviewers must be external (not affiliated with the university). They have a maximum of 60 days to complete their evaluations.
  • These reviewers may be appointed as official opponents in the final doctoral procedure, if they meet the criteria set out in the University Doctoral Regulations.
  • If a negative evaluation is issued during the research center disputation, it is not necessary to appoint new reviewers; the candidate may revise the dissertation based on the comments received before submitting it officially to the Doctoral School.
  • An attendance sheet must be kept, and minutes must be recorded during the research center disputation.

The minutes of the research center disputation must include:

  • The names of the committee members,
  • A summary of the written evaluations,
  • The questions raised during the disputation and the candidate’s responses,
  • A brief summary and evaluation of the discussion.

Documents Required for Organizing the Research Center Disputation

The following documents must be submitted for the research center disputation:

  • Dissertation;
  • Summary at the end of the dissertation
  • CV;
  • Short biography written in the third person (to be read by the chair during the research center disputation)
  • Printed publication list from the MTMT;
  • Printed versions of two publications;
  • Thesis booklet;

All these documents must be sent to the Doctoral School Administration at the email address: phd@inf.elte.hu .

After the reviews are received, the doctoral candidate is responsible for coordinating the date of the research center disputation with the chair and the reviewers. The finalized date must be communicated in advance to the Doctoral School Administration via email (phd@inf.elte.hu). The Doctoral School Administration, in exceptional cases, may only send the official invitations and the written record of the research center defense.

Before the research center disputation, the candidate is required to submit written responses to the reviewers' evaluations.
