Eötvös Loránd University ranked 509th in the world, placing it in the top 2.4 percent of higher education institutions globally according to the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR).
In CWUR's 2026 rankings published on June 1st, over 21,000 institutions worldwide were evaluated based on the quality of education, graduate employment opportunities, faculty excellence, highly cited publications, and citation rates. Only the top two thousand higher education institutions made it onto the 2026 list. ELTE ranked 509th, thus placing among the top 2.4 percent of universities worldwide.
According to the evaluation, it has also been Hungary's best university for thirteen years running.
Altogether, seven Hungarian universities appear in this year’s rankings: after ELTE, University of Szeged is 604th, Semmelweis University is 662nd, University of Debrecen is 825th, Budapest University of Technology and Economics is 1051st, University of Pécs is 1239th, and Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences is 1750th.
International Overview
The top of the ranking remains unchanged this year, with Harvard, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and Stanford occupying the first three places respectively. Once again, eight American and two British universities share the top ten. China has 360 institutions in the elite group, Japan 102, the United Kingdom 89, and Russia 42.
From Central Europe, Austria's University of Vienna (206th), Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic (248th), University of Belgrade in Serbia (393rd), Jagiellonian University in Poland (396th), University of Ljubljana in Slovenia (444th), University of Zagreb in Croatia (522nd), Comenius University in Bratislava, Slovakia (748th), and Babeș-Bolyai University in Romania (966th) lead their respective local rankings.
