Understanding the curriculum
♦ Essential guide - Curriculum ♦
It is vital for you to understand your curriculum. Here is what you need to know:
Key terms
- Compulsory subject: They can be lectures or group work (seminars or practices) and you must complete all them in order to graduate.
- Compulsory Elective subject: You can choose them from the thematic list offered by the current university schedule at the time, but you still have to complete them.
- Elective subject: You have to complete some of them as it is compulsory for students through the free subject choosing prescribed by the training and graduation requirements. You can choose them freely from the complete list of subjects offered by the university.
In the BSC programme you have to complete 180 credits:

- In the recommended semester column, you will find the subjects recommended for the given semester for the ideal progress in your studies (30 credits/semester are recommended). Always check whether you have fulfilled the prerequisites of the subject, because the system will not let you register if you have not completed the required prerequisite subjects.
- Some subjects have separate subject codes for the lecture (ending in E) and the practice (ending in G). You will receive separate grades for each.
- Other subjects have the same subject code for the lecture and the practice; however, they differ in their course codes. In this case, lectures are numbered with course codes ending in 90/91/92. Several courses may belong to one subject, which means that the same subject is offered with multiple courses with multiple timetable information due to the number of students. The course is a subcategory of the subject. In this case – i.e. for a subject with a subject code ending in EG –, you will receive a combined grade from the two courses.
Abbreviations in your curriculum:
P: practice grade
E: exam
C: continuous assessment (at least 5 independent tests/assessments during the study period)
X: combined subject (lecture + practice)
The endings of the subject codes refer to the type of the subject such as:
EG: Lecture + Practice course under the same subject code
E: Lecture
G: Practice
Types of assessment
We distinguish between theoretical (exam/lecture) and practical (practice) subjects.:
- Theoretical subjects (Exam/Lecture): assessed through oral or written exams during the exam period. You must attend at least 2/3 of compulsory lectures unless exempted. If you do not meet the attendance requirements, you will not be allowed to take the exam.
- Practical subjects (Practice): assessed based on your performance during the term. Grades are entered in Neptun by the end of the exam period. If you fail, you may get one chance to improve your grade in the the exam period, in accordance with the training programme of the major or the offered courses.
- Continuous assessment practical subjects: In subjects with codes ending in FG, the assessment is continuous, involving at least 5 assessments during the term. In this case, there is no obligation for retake opportunities. The deadline for entering the grades in Neptun 15th of January for the Autumn Semester, and 15th of June for the Spring Semester.
- While there are subjects where the exam (lecture) and the practice of the same subject have separate subject codes, there are some subjects where the subject code is the same, but the lecture and the practice differ in their course codes (combined subjects). As for the former, the type of assessment is a practice grade for the practice and an exam for the lecture, i.e., you will receive separate grades for them. You can only register for the exam of the lecture after completing the practice. The practical course is a weak prerequisite of the lecture course.
- Where the lecture and the practice are offered under the same subject code (EG), the final grade of the two courses will be a combined grade: in this case, you will only be able to pass the subject if you have passed both the practical and the theoretical parts. The subject will result in a single practice or exam grade.
Understanding the curriculum
- Combined assessment (subjects ending in EG code): Lecture and practice grades are combined into one final grade.
- Separate Lecture and Practice: If a subject has different codes for the lecture and the practice, the exam and the practice are regarded as two different subjects, which you have to complete separately. You cannot take the exam unless you have completed the practice subject first. The practical subject is a (weak) prerequisite for the lecture.
- Follow-up Subjects: You can only take a follow-up subject (the subject which has a preliminary/introductory, or prerequisite subject) if you are registered for or have completed its prerequisite subject (weak prerequisite or strong prerequisite, respectively).
Advancement Tips
- Choose your subjects based on your past performance. You do not have to stick to 30 credits per semester, although it is recommended to do so. Make sure to complete the prerequisite subjects, otherwise you may fall behind in your studies.
- Before the semester starts, check for any extra administration tasks such as
- registering for a subject multiple times involves fee,
- requesting prerequisite weakening,
- requesting an exam course, etc.
You can only complete these tasks on time if you are aware of your curriculum as well as the administrative processes and the deadlines.
Monitor your advancement in your curriculum!
Credit Overrun Fee – Elective Subjects
- You can complete courses worth 10% more credits than required free of charge.
- Beyond this 10%, elective courses that are not offered by the Faculty of Informatics are subject to a fee of 10,000 HUF/credit (this amount is the same as the fee agreed upon by the Faculty Council for guest student credits, which has been 10,000 HUF/credit since September 2023). The exceptions are vocational college and HSUP subjects, which are free of charge. The basis of the calculation is the credit value of the elective courses to be completed in the student's curriculum + credits over 10% of the total credits in the curriculum. For instance, BSc in Computer Science with a full-time work schedule: 10 credits (curriculum) + 18 credits (10%) = above 28 credits; you are required to pay for elective subjects not advertised offered by the Faculty of Informatics. The credit value of vocational college and HSUP subjects is deducted before determining the amount to be paid.
- If you took subjects from other faculties before September 2023 and thus have exceeded the number of optional credits specified in your curriculum, you will only have to pay a fee for subjects offered by other faculties and taken after September 2023.
- You can still take subjects from the subject selection offered by the Faculty of Informatics at a fee of 0 HUF/credit i.e. for free.
